How to recover lost data with QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery?

It is specifically designed to recover the lost data files or company data. Sometimes it happens that due to technical faults your company’s data will be lost. But with the help of QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery option, your data will be automatically backed up. And it will also recover all your data. So that you can access the data whenever you want. The QB auto data recovery uses the current transaction log file and also a copy of the company file to restore the lost transactions. Although there are two ways in which ADR recover the lost data files. They are as follows:

  • Regenerate the lost transaction with the current transaction log file and a copy of the company file.
  • Regenerate the last few hours of transactions along with the copy of the company file and transaction log file.

Points to remember before Auto Data Recovery

Before using the QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery feature, you have to keep several points in your mind. They are like:

  • First, QuickBooks ADR is only available in QuickBooks Pro, Premier, and Enterprise Solutions for Windows.
  • Auto Data Recovery feature is not available in Accountant Editions.
  • Ensure that the QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery file size should not exceed 1.5 Gigabytes. 
  • Or if your backup is bigger than 1.5 Gigabytes, then QuickBooks will not create an ADR file.
  • To get maximum benefits of this feature, then verify that your QuickBooks Desktop always has the latest updates.

Steps to recover the lost data files with QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery

QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery feature helps to recover the data files that have been lost due to corruption or data loss. To recover the lost data, then follow these steps such as:

Recover current transactions using the original transaction log file with company file(qbw.adr)

By following these steps, you can recover all your transactions. They are as follows:

  • First of all, create a new folder on your Desktop such as the QB Test.
  • Then open the folder where the company file is saved.
  • Press F2 to check the location of your company file on the Product Information screen.
  • Search for the transaction log file in your company file’s folder. Also, it has the same name as your company file.
  • And then Show file extensions.
  • If you can’t identify the .tlg file, then perform these steps to show file extensions like:
    • Press Windows+E keys altogether to open the File Explorer.
    • Click on the Organize option, then choose Folder and search options.
    • For Windows 10, 8.1 & 8: Choose View, then select Filename extension.
    • Select Hide extensions for known file types.
    • Click on Apply to apply the changes.
  • Copy the corresponding .tlg file of your company file, and then paste it to the QBTest folder.
  • Now open the QuickBooksAutoDataRecovery folder.
  • Next, copy the.QBW.ADR file and paste it to the QBTest folder. 
  • Now, you should now have a.QBW.adr and .tlg file on your QBTest folder.
  • In your QBTest folder, right-click the.QBW.ADR file to rename it.
  • Delete .adr at the end of the file.
  • Again open QuickBooks.
  • When you open the company file that is saved on your QBTest folder. Use your account register to verify all transactions are there.
  • Choose File >> Utilities >> Verify Data to check the data integrity of the recovered file.
  • If this copy of the company file is good, you can move the damaged company file to a different location and transfer the copy from QBTest to the original location.

Restore recent transactions using .tlg.adr and .qbw.adr files

With these steps, you can recover the last 12 hours of transactions. Follow these steps such as:

  • Firstly, you have to create a new folder like QBTest.
  • Open the folder where the company file is saved and search for the.QBW.ADR folder.
  • Find the.TLG.ADR and.QBW.ADR files. Although these files have the same name as your company file.
  • After that, click on Show file extensions
  • If you are not able to identify the.TLG.ADR and.QBW.ADR files.  Then perform these steps to show file extensions such as:
    • To open File Explorer altogether hold Windows+E keys.
    • And select Organize, then choose Folder and search options.
    • For Windows 10, 8.1 & 8: Choose View, then select Filename extension.
    • Select Hide extensions for known file types.
    • Next, select the Apply option to apply the modifications.
  • Copy the.TLG.ADR and.QBW.ADR files and paste these files to the QBTest folder.
  • On your QBTest folder, remove the .adr from the end of the file name.
  • Again open QB.
  • Access the company file that is saved on your QBTest folder. Use your account register to verify all transactions are there.
  • To check the data integrity of the recovered file: in the top left, select File then Utilities and then Verify Data.
  • If this copy of the company file is good, you can move the damaged company file to a different location. And transfer the copy from QBTest to the original location.
